The best free iPhone apps

iMore’s authoritative guide to the best free iPhone apps

iMore has a good list of the best free apps for the iPhone. I would like to add a few more which I think are great but left out there.

Zite: a very good news app. A good alternative to flipboard.
Wunderlist: a very simple to use, cross platform service to keep your to-do lists in sync.
Simplenote: its the best notes service which sync across all platforms. The UI is super simple to use and helps you focus just on writing.

Quick tip:A software fix for an unresponsive home button on your iDevice

The home button is both iconic and the most abused part on an iPhone or iPad. I have seen many struggle with a sticky or unresponsive home button. Here’s a quick and dirty fix for the unlucky ones:

Open Settings > General > Accessibility. Find Assistive  Touch and turn it on. You have a nice little software home button floating on your screen.

Home button fix

Not one of the best methods to fix the home button, but its quick, easy and doesn’t cost you a penny.

Some other methods:

  • Recalibrate the home button
Open a stock app(clock, calendar, etc) and hold the power button till the slide to power off appears. Then, keep holding the home button until you see your home screen. 50/50 chances of this working.
  • Replace with a new button
  • Reboot your device (Techpp suggests rebooting  your device often could solve the problem)
  • And if nothing works, buy a new device 😉

iCloud just works. Not.

When iCloud launched, Apple said that it just works. It turns out its not completely true. While many things like syncing of contacts, push mail etc work well, its the syncing between the iPhone and iPad apps that doesn’t work well. I added a reminder on the iPad and just forgot about it. In normal scenario, what would you expect to happen when icloud is enabled for reminders? You expect the reminder you added on your iPad to immediately appear on the iPhone as well. Well it turns out that the sync functionality works perfectly only when an instance of the app in case is open on both devices.

Same is the case with iBooks. You must open a new instance of the app to make it sync with other devices if its not running already.

Isn’t this method broken? Shouldn’t it just work, as promised? I hope things improve in a later update.
